이 단어들은 모두 어떤 상황ㆍ활동이 그것에 달려 있어서 지극히 중요하거나 필요함을 나타낸다.
essential (어떤 것의 존재ㆍ완성ㆍ성공 등에 없어서는 안 되므로) 필수적인[극히 중요한]:
Experience is essential for this job. 이 일에는 경험이 필수적이다.
vital (어떤 것의 존재ㆍ완성ㆍ성공 등에 없어서는 안 되므로) 필수적인[극히 중요한]:
The police play a vital role in our society. 경찰은 우리 사회에서 필수적인 역할을 한다.
essential or vital?
◇이 두 단어는 의미상으로 차이가 없고 동일한 범위의 명사들과 함께 동일한 구조 속에서 쓰인다.하지만 어조 면에서는 약간 차이가 있을 수 있다.
◇essential은 권위를 갖고 어떤 사실이나 의견을 말할 때 쓰인다.
◇vital은 흔히 무엇에 대한 우려가 있거나, 어떤 사실이나 의견의 진실성, 중요성 등을 남에게 설득할 필요가 있을 때 쓰인다. vital은 부정문에서는 덜 쓰인다:
It was vital to show that he was not afraid. 그가 두려워하지 않는다는 것을 보여 주는 것이 지극히 중요했다.
Money is not vital to happiness.
crucial (특정 상황ㆍ활동을 좌우할 정도로) 중대한[결정적인]:
It is crucial that we get this right. 우리가 이것을 바로잡는 것이 대단히 중요하다.
critical (앞으로의 상황에 영향을 미친다는 점에서) 대단히 중요한[중대한]:
Your decision is critical to our future. 당신의 결정은 우리의 장래에 대단히 중요하다.
crucial or critical?
이 두 단어는 의미상으로 차이가 없고 동일한 범위의 명사들과 함께 동일한 구조 속에서 쓰인다.
하지만 쓰이는 맥락은 약간 차이가 있다.
critical은 상업, 과학과 같은 전문적인 문제와 관련해서 쓰인다.
crucial은 흔히 우려감이나 어떤 감정을 유발할 수 있는 문제에 대해 말할 때 쓰인다.
decisive (특정 상황의 결과에 미치는 영향 면에서) 결정적인:
She has played a decisive role in the peace negotiations. 그녀가 그 평화 협상에서 결정적인 역할을 해 왔다.
indispensable 없어서는 안 될[필수적인]:
Cars have become an indispensable part of our lives. 자동차가 우리 생활에 없어서는 안 되는 부분이 되었다.
